The Wong Janice

The Wong Janice is a meditation teacher and cellist based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands helping millions of people feel more centred and calm through deep ambient cello meditation music, sounding somewhere in between Zoe Keating, Hildur Guðnadóttir and David Darling. She spends her days recording and editing cello meditation music in her home studio, hosting virtual cello meditation concerts from her living room, and guiding people to find their inner peace through online courses.

  • What’s your life motto?
"I allow myself to flow like water and experience the feeling of freedom."
  • What is Inner Peace for you?
Inner Peace to me is being balanced - emotionally and physically, not feeling too high, not too low, not numb, but in complete equilibrium.
  • Could you describe your most peaceful moment/situation?
During my first deep meditation experience during a 10-day Vipassana Silent Course, around the 9th and 10th day I felt more and more at ease. My thoughts were much slower and I could observe them one by one as they passed by. My favourite moment of the day was walking on the rock during the breaks when the sun was shining. It was so beautiful and peaceful and mirrored exactly how I felt.
  • What experience taught you the most in your life?
Achieving significant goals in my life taught me that I can achieve anything that I can dream up.
  • What was the most valuable piece of advice that you received?
In a very important period in my life, a friend said to me: "If you were a friend of Janice's, what advice would you give her right now?" The answer to this question and my subsequent actions changed my life.
  • Who/What is your biggest teacher?
Experience is my biggest teacher. It has given me wisdom and intuition.
  • What do you do when you have a bad day?
I like to go out inline speed skating to release the bad energy.
  • If you could wake up tomorrow having gained one quality or ability, what would it be?
To be able to live with no attachment, I guess that is otherwise known as enlightenment!
  • What is your funniest/most defining/most beautiful characteristic?
I think it's funny that I was born and grew up in a warm country where ice skating is very rare and now I am obsessed about ice skating, especially on natural ice :)

Born and raised in Melbourne, Australia, The Wong Janice began playing the cello at age 8, completing her classical training with a Licentiate Diploma of Music (L.Mus.A) at a young age of 18 and spent the following years as a session musician and playing in various bands. More recently she graduated with an Advanced Diploma of Music Production and Sound Engineering at Abbey Road Institute in Amsterdam to further her technical music skills.

In 2019 she decided to follow her dreams and compose her own music. By then, as meditation had become a huge part of her life, she realised they were the two things in her life that she wanted to practice and preach every single day. And if she could help herself and help others at the same time, then why not? With that, her solo cello meditation project was born. She released her debut album ‘Cello Music for Meditation’ and to complement, a unique live cello meditation concept: an intimate lie-down concert of deep ambient cello vibrations and sweeping cello melodies with her effect pedals and loop machine which led to sold-out shows in both The Netherlands and Australia and performances at TEDxAmsterdam and festivals such as Amsterdam Dance Event and Down The Rabbit Hole.

During the outbreak of covid-19 and the worldwide pandemic in early 2020, The Wong Janice started offering Virtual Cello Meditation Concerts to individuals all around the world to help cope with the lockdown and isolation. Her Online Cello Meditation Concert was mentioned in Forbes, Lonely Planet, ADWEEK, DailyMail and The Washington Post and she became a top-10 seller on Airbnb Online Experiences. Now she has been booked by more than 60 companies worldwide such as Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Adidas, Airbnb and Philips for virtual wellness and team-building events, and has more than 8 million streams on Spotify.

In collaboration with meditation app Insight Timer, in 2020 she released ‘Chakra Cleansing with Deep Cello’, a 10-day online course designed to help you break free from emotional blockages through the healing and restorative power of sound, which now has 12,000 students. She also hosts free live chakra cleansing sessions weekly on the meditation app.
